Song Review#42 – Found/Tonight, Ben Platt and Lin-Manuel Miranda

This beautiful song is made up of two songs, first performed in Broadway musicals Dear Evan Hansen (Lead: Ben Platt) and Hamilton (Lead: Lin-Manuel). This mash-up style piece is donating all of its proceeds to March for Our Lives, the campaign running to protest the American government’s inactivity on gun control.

“We may not yet have reached our glory, But I will gladly join the fight.
And when our children tell their story, They’ll tell the story of tonight.”

After the Parkland shootings, the youth of America, celebrities and a worldwide audience have created the March for Our Lives campaign, using their voices and influences to bring this issue to a head. The March for Our Lives rally took place March 25th in Washington DC. it featured many famous faces, all fighting for the same cause.

The ballad itself holds true to its lyrics. It tells the story of being lost but how in the midst of the darkness, everyone can be found and everyone can join in the fight. It shines a light on how in the past and still in the present, so many events such as Parkland have been brushed aside and there have been no change to gun rules in order to prevent this. But this song tells of how these students, in particular, have decided it’s enough. Something must be done. Rising from the ashes makes you stronger and rising together as one makes an unbeatable force.

“Raise a glass to freedom, Something they can never take away”

Ben Platt and Lin-Manuel’s voices combine to make this incredibly heartfelt tribute to those lost to gun crimes and those lost too soon. Everything in these two vocalists tones just have this incredible essence of genuineness. They clearly are passionate about the cause, and you can hear it in this song. The piano part reminds me of the way sunlight comes through dark clouds after a storm. It just seems to come through and twinkle…maybe that’s a bit cheesy, but I may as well say exactly what I feel.

“Even when the dark comes crashing through, When you need a friend to carry you,
When you’re broken on the ground, You will be found.”

Take a listen – and please please please buy this song to support this amazing cause.
